Grant for Human Rights Research Project Within the programme
Building Human Rights Knowledge and Resources in the
Middle East and North Africa 2012

 

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute announces the Grant for Human Right Research Project 2012 within the programme “Building Human Rights Knowledge and Resources in the Middle East and North Africa”. One of the expected results of the programme is to increase the number of relevant human rights research in Arabic accessible in the MENA region, and the grant/scholarship forms part of the activities leading to this result.

Scholarships will be awarded to 4-5 research teams representing different sectors, planning to carry out, or carrying out, a research project/study in the field of human rights, relevant for the MENA region, focusing on the following areas: Civil and Political rights, including citizenship, minority rights and access to information; Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Regional protection mechanisms for human rights; and areas related to human rights of women and rights of persons with disabilities.     

The research team should consist of a minimum of three persons representing at least two of the following four sectors: Academia; Non-Governmental Organisations; National Human Rights Institutions; and (other) Governmental Institutions. RWI will also consider cross-countries research projects where the team members represent two or more of the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria or Tunisia. RWI recommends striving for gender balanced research team.

The research project shall start no later than 1 April 2012 and shall be finalised no later than 15 July 2012. Each scholarship grant amounts to a maximum of USD 7,000 or EUR 5,000. The grant for cross-countries research projects can amount to a maximum of USD 10,000 (or EUR 7,600)

Applications for the scholarship should include a brief description of the project, its aim and its relevance. The application should also include a brief introduction of the research team and the research team leader, with CV’s attached, as well as a timeframe listing planned activities. In relation to this timeframe there should also be a budget for the project, specifying the estimated total cost as well as the amount scheduled to be spent on the different activities. Applications should also include information on where the project will mainly be carried out (which institution, if any, hosts the project), and information about the planned outcome (seminars, reports etc.). Furthermore, applications shall include, when applicable, information about other sources of funding available for the project. Applications should be written in English or French. The selected research teams awarded with the RWI Research Scholarship will be invited to attend a training workshop on research methodology to be held in Amman in March 2012.

The research teams awarded with the RWI Research Scholarship are expected to present the results of the research in a written report in Arabic language to be presented in a regional conference to be held during summer 2012.
